Biggles

James Bigglesworth is the most famous hero in a series of 98 books, not in chronological order (see chronology list), and several short stories by Captain W.E. Johns. Friend and foe know him as "Biggles".
He was born in 1899 in India from English parents and went to school in England, because of his recurrent fevers.
In 1916, in World War I, he learned to fly and he became a fighter pilot for the RFC in France and did his first jobs for the Intelligence Service on request of major Raymond.
In 1918 Biggles' only romance ends tragically: his lovely Marie turns out to be a German spy.
After that war he started his own flying company, Biggles & Co, together with his loyal friend/colleague and cousin the Honourable Algernon Montgomery Lacey, "Algy". Again, most of his assignments all over the world came from the Secret Intelligence Service. In these years Biggles and Algy meet the young Ginger Hebblethwaite, who becomes a permanent member of the team.
After the beginning of World War II, Biggles is appointed squadron-leader of 666 Spitfire Squadron. His adventures with Algy, Ginger, their new mate lord Bertie Lissie and his other pilots all over the world fill many books again.

The Huns, Biggles saw at once, were withdrawing,
all but one Albatross, which was going down at
the final dive at the Mess.

From "Biggles on the spot" - Publishing Company I.B.A. (1999).

After World War II the four friends live together in a London May Fair apartment and join the Scotland Yard Flying Police Squad, under command of air commodore Raymond and this brings them into many thrilling adventures both in and outside England.
